Stories and highlights
There's always something to celebrate at our school! From exciting events to proud moments and everyday wins, here are some of our highlights.
A year at our school
Leadership Possibilities
At Blackville, rural location is never a barrier to leadership. Our students have the incredible opportunity to fly to Sydney and take part in the Halogen Leadership Experience biannually, where they meet inspiring Australians like Olympic swimmer Emma McKeon and Thomas Duncan-Watt, author. These experiences ignite our students’ confidence and passion, showing them that leadership knows no limits. Returning home, they bring new ideas and a strong sense of purpose, ready to lead and inspire their own school community
Small Schools Spelling Bee
From its humble beginnings with just 9 students, our small school with a big heart has grown to proudly host over 100 students for the annual Small Schools Spelling Bee. This vibrant event is more than a competition—it’s a celebration where students showcase their spelling prowess while strengthening friendships, both new and old. Participating in the Spelling Bee offers students the chance to challenge themselves, build confidence, and experience the joy of learning in a supportive and comfortable environment. This reflects our school’s core values of encouraging everyone to have a go and always try their best. The growth of the event and the enthusiasm it inspires is a true testament to the positive and inclusive spirit that defines our school community.
Annual excursion
Our primary students are given incredible opportunities to embark on week-long excursions to exciting destinations such as Canberra, the Gold Coast, Sydney, and Coffs Harbour. These journeys go far beyond the classroom, offering rich, hands-on learning experiences that bring their studies to life. Excursions like these allow students to explore new environments, engage with history, science, and culture firsthand, and develop important life skills such as independence, teamwork, and resilience. They create lasting memories through shared adventures and challenges, helping students build confidence and friendships that endure well beyond their primary years. By participating in these immersive trips, our students gain a broader perspective of the world around them and return with a deeper enthusiasm for learning—benefits that continue to shape their growth and success long after they leave primary school.
Home Art Program
Being selected as one of only a few schools to participate in the prestigious HOME Indigenous Art Program is a remarkable honour that brings unique benefits to our school community. This exclusive opportunity allows our students to engage deeply with Indigenous culture and art, fostering a genuine connection to the rich stories, traditions, and perspectives of First Nations peoples.
What makes the HOME program truly special is its focus on collaboration with Indigenous artists and elders, providing students with authentic, hands-on experiences that go beyond the classroom. Through workshops, mentorship, and creative projects, students not only develop their artistic skills but also gain a profound understanding and respect for Indigenous heritage. Participation in the HOME Indigenous Art Program enriches our school’s cultural fabric, promotes inclusivity, and inspires students to appreciate the power of storytelling through art. It empowers them to become ambassadors of reconciliation and cultural awareness, making their learning journey meaningful and impactful.
Being part of this unique program highlights our school’s commitment to celebrating Indigenous voices and creating opportunities for all students to learn, grow, and connect in ways that are both educational and transformative.
Small School Alliance
Being part of a small school alliance brings the best of both worlds—close, supportive communities combined with the excitement and opportunities of a larger network. At Blackville and our partner small schools, students have the unique chance to come together, mix, and form lasting friendships across a variety of activities and events. Whether it’s competing side by side in swimming, athletics, or cross country, students build teamwork, sportsmanship, and strong bonds that extend beyond the classroom. These experiences foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie, helping students to grow socially as well as physically. Beyond sports, our alliance collaborates on enriching educational and cultural events like Science Day and Harmony Day. These occasions provide dynamic, hands-on learning opportunities and celebrate diversity, encouraging students to share ideas, respect differences, and work together creatively. Being part of this small school alliance means students enjoy the personalised attention and community spirit of a small school while benefiting from the broader experiences, friendships, and learning opportunities that come from connecting with peers across multiple schools. It’s a vibrant, enriching environment where every student can shine and belong.
Individualised learning
Imagine a place where every student is seen, heard, and truly understood. At Blackville, this is more than just an idea—it’s our everyday reality. From the moment students walk through our doors, they become part of a close-knit community where small class sizes allow teachers to connect deeply with each individual. Our educators don’t just teach; they listen, observe, and adapt, creating personalised learning programs that meet each student exactly where they are.
One student might receive extra support in reading, while another is challenged to explore new mathematical concepts—all within a classroom where every voice matters. This tailored approach means students aren’t lost in the crowd; instead, they flourish, gaining confidence and skills across all key learning areas.
At Blackville, growth isn’t just a goal—it’s a journey we take together, celebrating every milestone along the way. When you choose Blackville, you’re choosing a school that’s dedicated to nurturing each child’s potential and helping them succeed across multiple areas.
"What we love most about this school is the caring environment and the dedication of the staff. Our child is not only learning but thriving—feeling valued, supported, and excited to go to school each day."— a parent of Blackville Public School
